JomWeb, a Malay colloquial term for ‘let’s web’, is an initiative by the web and IT community of Malaysia to share and discuss ideas among likeminded people in the industry through a series of events, forum and Facebook groups, and many more.

JomLaunch (‘let’s launch’) is part of these initiatives, showcasing interesting web apps & startup ideas built by Malaysian entrepreneurs. The event involves short presentations where every project owner is given 10 minutes to talk about their project ideas as well as taking questions from the floor later. It was a really great event to catch up and network with Malaysian web and IT community and encountering a myriad of ideas. This third JomLaunch was especially even more special as it was done as part of the events for this year’s Malaysia Open Source Conference, or MOSCMY.

It was the perfect weekend to get all inspired.

Ideas abound

There were 16 projects up for presentations on this day. They were Jooblii, IoT Switch, Tabungku, Hifz, RPZDB, Unimuf, MakanJom, SumberManusia, Quadifi, Putra App, Ordervery, Jom+Help, GoUmrah, CloudHRD, CastMyCode V2 and last but not least NEF’s own project, OtakIT.

Jooblii

Jooblii is a marketplace and online business academy, especially targeted for B2B instead of B2C -think of Alibaba meets Lynda. The platform was created to help new businesses develop the proper skills they need. The project was presented by Lilyana Latiff, CTO for Aleph One and former Joota Product Manager and Co-Founder. Jooblii is also special to us since Stampede is not only present to the event in the capacity of UX team, front-end and programming – we also have our part as a shareholder for the project. Go Jooblii!

Tabungku

Tabungku is a crowdfunding platform for those in need of financial help to cover the medical costs. The founder, Shak Hassan, ran through a good list of problem statements  – among others, while Malaysians love to donate, but there had been no official, dedicated and trustworthy channel. Tabungku was created to serve as a donation platform, as well as to educate and coach people who are in need of donations on the proper channels to get them.

IoT Switch

Probably the only hardware demo, IoT Switch is a smart switch containing 16 inputs and 16 outputs, where a signal will be pushed to the server and to a phone app. The signal can also be sent back to the board, hence bi-directional. An example of usage is you could install it at the window, and it can send you a signal when the window is opened. What’s even more amazing is the project owner, Shahrul Nizam, built the PCB board by himself.

Hifz

Hifz is an iOs app to aid Quran recited and memorization. Presented by serial entrepreneur, Azizi Khalid, who frequently commutes between Perth and Kuala Lumpur, he kicked off the presentation  by going through the challenges for Quran recitation – mainly the difficulty, how it’s time consuming and with steep learning curve, it is easy to feel demotivated. Upon signing up, users will be receiving daily lessons and goals, and verses can be hidden to test user’s memories.

RPZDB

Amir Haris Ahmad is the go-to-guy when it comes to DNS expertise in Malaysia. One of his other projects, DNSVault is being used in colleges and ISPs in the country as well as abroad. In this Jomlaunch, he talked about RPZDB, a database for DNS servers to prevent users from accessing dangerous websites.

Unimuf

Recognising the needs for affordable rental cars for universities, Nadzri Sazali decided to come up with his own Airbnb for cars. Hence the birth of Unimuf, a peer-to-peer car sharing platform. Through Unimuf, it connects the owner of the cars and the users who wanted to rent the car through a simple and friendly interface. Unimuf also will connect users with transporters – those who will drive for you if you do not feel like driving. In the meantime, Unimuf is only available around Gombak.

Makan Jom

Eating out is so synonym with Malaysians to the point that sometimes we have trouble deciding where to go to eat. Recognising this problem, Afirul Afif came up with the idea of Makan Jom (Malay colloquial for ‘let’s eat’), an app for halal restaurants which can searched through locations and food choice. To date so far, the app had received lots of interest – they already have 24,000 installs so far on Google Play!

Sumber Manusia

SumberManusia is a Human Resources app which could help in managing resources for multicompanies and SMEs. Presented by Nasrul Hazim, the Chief Architect, SumberManusia is hoped to be able to solve Human Resources woes in companies, providing features for leave application and approval, claims, payroll and many more. SumberManusia will also provide API for systems who want to integrate the app with their current legacy.

Quadifi

Quadifi is an interesting project – it is a Wifi controller which enables you to manage your Wifi Hotspots easily on the cloud. Currently in its beta phase, Quadifi provides an easy to use web interface and will soon come with its own plug-and-play router. An example of businesses who could use Quadifi are cafes, restaurants and public places offering wifi, paid or free.

Putra App

Putra App is an application for public transport users – even the name comes from (pu)blic (tra)nsportation – to share information and check out schedules for public transportations. On top of a simple registration, Putra App also offers offline capability, enabling you to access previous loaded data of schedules and traffic information without Internet connection. Users are also able to share real-time data with each other, hence enabling movement from place to place using Kuala Lumpur public transportation services.

Ordervery

Ordervery is an online system that help to solve manual and semi-manual dropship businesses by giving them an automated system. This further allows the businesses to focus on product and new product development, and their sales team can further focus on marketing and selling activities. No more headache!

Jom+Help

Jom+Help is a system to help enlist the help of volunteers through a Yes/No based question and answer series. Framing the problem statement through the experience of having so much headache when asking for help through Whatsapp groups, Jom+Help hopes to be able to simplify the process through its simple interface Targeted towards NGOs and non-profit organisations, there were a lot of feedback for Jom+Help, mainly requesting for the poll to be more than just a Yes/No- based question, but more towards being able to add up more options.

Go Umrah

Go Umrah is basically Trivago for umrah (which is a pilgrimage to Mecca performed by Muslims that can be undertaken at any time of the year, in contrast to the Hajj). The app allows you to compare a number of umrah packages according to budget, time and other necessary conveniences from your end. There is a lot of potential for this app so we have a feeling that once the app gets a better grasp of the user experience, this app could shine.

CloudHRD

CloudHRD aims to simply Human Resources system by providing an easily accessible application of HR suite. Designed to serve small-to-medium sized organisations, CloudHRD provides features such as leave management, employee information, payroll, claims and also tasks. What’s even more interesting is CloudHRD comes with a very intuitive user interface, for example  Trello-like easy task management for employees as well as Facebook-like social timeline for employees to communicate with each other.

Cast My Code V2

Cast My Code V2 is yet another project by Zulfa Juniadi, currently ranked as the No.3 PHP Developer in Kuala Lumpur. Always passionate about coding, Zulfa developed Cast My Code V2 as a web app for sharing code and slides between teachers’ and students’ screens in real time. In the future, Zulfa plans to polish the app with a better UI as well as allowing live video streaming between teachers and students.

OtakIT

The presentations were concluded with a short stand-up presentation by Iszudin Ismail on OtakIT, an online publication revolving around the news and information in the world of web and IT in Malaysia. Fully written in Bahasa Malaysia, the platform hopes to be able to reach more Malay-speaking web and IT community. In the meantime, OtakIT is also looking for writers – so do contact Iszudin if you are interested to join!

Loosen up those muscles

Well, desk job dwellers like us – programmers, designers, writers etc. – aren’t typically know for our superior levels of physical fitness due to spending long hours in front of the screen, typing away and sitting all day. Being tethered to our machines often leads to a sedentary lifestyle for us, and a high occupational correlation with obesity.

Being aware of this fact, the organisers of JomLaunch made an initiative to invite Prof Azlan Ghanie of Senaman Melayu Tua (Ancient Malay Exercise). The exercise is an ancient form of physical exercise that focuses on breathing techniques, stretches and movements to strengthen the body. Azlan had turned to this exercise form after he was suffering from a stroke at 32, which left him partially paralysed.

“Although I sought all sorts of treatments ranging from modern to traditional, I didn’t show signs of improvement. I eventually started to practise various techniques of Senaman Tua (which I had learnt from my father) and my health gradually improved,” recounted Azlan, who is also the founder and editor of Seni Beladiri, a monthly magazine dedicated to the Malaysian martial arts scene.

Under his quiet demeanour, Azlan, or known as Sifu Azlan to his followers, showed a rigorous demo on how to loosen up those muscles after a long day of sitting at the desk. He had some of us standing together with him to perform the exercises. Fun times!

Close-knit, casual community

What we also noticed is that, while the projects are very highly thought-through, the manner in which the presentations were conducted were really casually done. We could see some of the presenters were quite nervous – so the organisers cracked some jokes and that helped lighten off the stage fright.

As we work remotely, we only stalk recognise the faces of wonderful and experienced folks of Malaysian web community through their Facebook accounts and posts. Imagine our delight when we got to meet them face-to-face and discuss so many interesting things, from the Delphi days to the era of Internet of Things, over nasi campur and teh tarik.

It was great meeting everyone, and looking forward for JomLaunch 4.0!

My campus life

Back in September 2015, I enrolled for a post-graduate programme at a local public university. At the time, I had to apply for special leave to focus on getting married and did not want to miss classes. After that was over, I re-enrolled back a few months later (March 2016) to pursue a Masters of Science in Information Technology. Why a Masters degree so early you ask? Well, ever since the day of my degree’s convocation day, my dad had been pushing me to pursue one.

I had a rough time deciding whether to go with research or coursework for my evaluation.

Not being one to waste time, I decided to look for what I was truly passionate about, and after 2 years I had finally found it, User Experience (UX). I was looking for a course in Human-Centered Informatics (HCI) and found out that this university has a lot of specialists in the field. As a bonus, it also helped out with my financial situation as it was still in an affordable range. I had a rough time deciding whether to go with research or coursework for my evaluation. Eventually, I came to a decision with coursework because they had this HCI Track in the study plan.

Unfortunately, it came to my surprise that they did not open the HCI Track for the semester. The Head of Programme then advised me to opt for the Research Track instead, which only begins on the 4th semester. Being the determined person I am, I stayed with the coursework because there was a subject called Human-Centered Informatics (HCI) that semester and I thought that I should give a shot.

As it turns out that I still have much to learn…

And then came Stampede

Around the same time, I applied for a job at Stampede, did their trial run and several rounds of interviews before accepted into the team. I was then introduced to the world of remote working. At the beginning, I was given a lot of training to make sure by skills were on par. As of now, I have already completed all the courses and presentation of what I have learned over the past weeks (will get more courses soon). But there was one thing that I was still struggling with, and that was practical development training. As it turns out that I still have much to learn in order to keep up with the company’s standard of quality. I have never sliced a design to HTML, pixel-by-pixel, and my HTML structuring still needs much improvement. As of me writing this, I am currently on my 2nd month at Stampede and looking forward to constantly improve my skills, especially in front-end development.

They encourage you to share your experiences…

So how do I think my experience at Stampede has made me better prepared for my Master degree course? The first thing I can think of is pretty much summed in this phrase, “You are not what you think you are”. You may think you are at a certain level of skill but reality will bring your feet back down to the earth. Remote working is not easy, especially when you are so used with going to your place of work, and working shifts or fixed office hours. But the team here is very welcoming and it did not took so long for me to be comfortable with them.

They are also very structured—I can even say that it is more structured than most companies with physical offices. The team encourages you to share your experiences. Just imagine if in a day one person shares one thing, that’s 8 new things we learn everyday (we are currently a team of 8), that’s 40 new things per week, 160 per month! (Let the math sink in).

Positivity is what brings the team forward…

Everyday there will be a team scrum usually before lunch. During this session each member will be updating their tasks and given new ones, this is new for me and personally I feel that this is so much better than a 3 hours meeting because you have to absorb so much just for one meeting.

Positivity is what brings the team forward, every week there will be a session where everyone will share what have made them happy and grateful from the previous week. Also, everyone is given a chance to host something called, Happy Things. It is a team bonding activity, that makes us become closer with one another. It is excellent for a new hire like myself to improve my speaking and presentation skills. Yes, that is on top of the presentation I have to do for every course I have learned.

Putting it all into perspective

All I can say is that the months of working at Stampede is a huge paradigm shift for me. The courses assigned by Stampede to train my soft skills has been nothing but an improvement to how I view and manage things. For example, I learned about the sunk-cost effect, which is defined as a tendency for humans to continue investing in something that clearly isn’t working. This has led my decision to change my Masters mode from coursework to research. As I had mentioned previously, HCI is my focus for the semester, so with Stampede being a creative agency which practices User Experience, the HCI subject has helped a lot in teaching me the importance of designing for people. As this is still my first semester, I hope my application to do research will be accepted and my time with Stampede will continue.

At Stampede we have our daily scrum meeting at 2 pm, of which we called The Blitz, where we update what had we been working on and our plans for the day as well as some harmless banters after that. It got us talking to how excited we are about Hari Raya, so I decided to throw a quick question,

What does Hari Raya mean to you?

Shaiful is looking forward to have Kuala Lumpur to himself

“Being born and raised in Kuala Lumpur, I am pretty much a city boy – also because my grandparents are no longer around, so I don’t really get the chance to celebrate Hari Raya in kampung. When most people go back kampung (going back to their hometowns), I look forward to empty roads and a more chill KL. Generally, my friends and families would visit each other in each other’s houses, catching up and stuff.

Another thing I really look forward to is our tradition of having open houses for the whole month of Syawal!”

Iwan is elated to spend Hari Raya in two kampungs

“This is my first year of marriage, so I get to experience the unspoken concern of deciding which kampung to spend in like other married couples do. Luckily, my wife’s family and mine live very close to each other, so we get to visit each other’s family as often as we could during the Hari Raya break.

Also, it’s good to meet friends and catch up, and get some break from work. Looking forward to come back to the office all recuperated.”

Dahlia plans to eat all day long

(I asked if she wants to change her answer, she replied with a firm, “no”.)

Shaza is grateful to have enough – and KFC!

“Me and Dov are not very particular in celebrating Hari Raya, mostly because every Hari Raya we would go back to my mother’s kampung in Negeri Sembilan. We are a big family, and have to meet every family members from all ages, so we have to socialise a lot. It is also the time of the year to meet my siblings face to face. Although we talk to each other a lot, my siblings and I live all over Malaysia – so it was fun to meet them again and bully each other, sometimes joined by my parents who are just as comical as we are.

Also, another thing you must know – my family and I have this unspoken tradition. On the night of second Raya, after all the food is finished no matter how much they were cooked, we would all huddle up together in a car, bantering over who squashed whom and went ahead to queue with the whole town to buy KFC bucket meals to share with the whole family.

Hari Raya also taught me to be grateful for what I have – and if I have more than that, then it’s a bonus. I think that’s how the world should work for everyone.

Being an introvert, usually I need a few days to recuperate after coming back to Langkawi after Hari Raya break.

Also, only on Hari Raya we get to see Dov in baju melayu, even only for a few hours in between Hari Raya prayer. It’s actually a rare sight!”

Zana is just happy to catch up with family

“I am an only child, but ever since I was small I had been very close to my cousins. Now that we are all grown up, where most of my cousins are all scattered around Malaysia due to family and career obligation, it is about the time of the year we get to meet each other again and catch up.

I think Hari Raya is the day when my mother is the happiest because she gets to spend so much time with family. So seeing her happy makes me happy – although that would probably mean sometimes I have to roll on the carpet in my baju kurung throwing a tantrum, “When do we get to go home?!” after she had uttered goodbyes but still been chatting with the relatives for yet another hour at least.

Also, I love it that I get to dress up 😉 And yes, echoing Dahlia, FOOD!”

Every Malaysian has deep, special pride in our hearts for Malaysia Airlines. To see our beautiful wau bulan – the moon-kite in MAS logo that is so synonymous to our country’s friendliness and warmth – shredded and broken in the fields of Ukraine was heartbreaking.

Yesterday was declared a national mourning day in Malaysia as we finally received the fallen passengers of MH17 on our soil.

A project requires many things: fulfillment of responsibilities, good cooperation, effective communication and the awareness to be your own leaders. For the past one year, Stampede has been actively managing post-development tasks for one of our biggest accounts. As with other projects, there were stumbling blocks. But more recently and particularly today, everyone shines at meeting the demands of their. They executed a well-orchestrated maneuver and completed their tasks with a bang.

Mothers, Lock Your Daughters

We’re very proud of our three young dashing crew – Syazwan Hakim, See Guo Lin and Mujib Jazmin. Between the three of them, they tackled updates on a severely limited system and resolved them instantly. On a live server.

GL, Mujib and I received requests from the client and quickly distribute the tasks to the expert in charge. Mujib handled anything design-related, Syazwan did his front-end magic then GL followed through with the real deal coding. We then reported progresses and completion to the client on the same hour within minutes.

This is definitely my dream team. Their young spirits and friendship are invaluable to me. We had so much jokes and fun during the session, it was hilarious. Cherry on top – I received word that the client was very pleased with our response and speed. He skyped me kind words until he ran out of praise.

I’m surrounded by three extraordinary men in the team. Yeah I’m happy. 😉

Some people when they look for a job in journalism ask themselves, What do I like to do and Who can take me there? Who can get me to a war zone? To a ballpark? To Wall Street? To politicians, to movie stars? Who’s got the vehicle? And you send them your resume and you say, “I want a seat in your car.” … And you wait.
But there are some people, who don’t wait.
I don’t know exactly what going on inside them; but they have this… hunger. It’s almost like an ache. Something inside you says I can’t wait to be asked I just have to jump in and do it.
So for this age, for your time, I want you to just think about this: Think about NOT waiting your turn.
Instead, think about getting together with friends that you admire, or envy. Think about entrepeneuring. Think about NOT waiting for a company to call you up. Think about not giving your heart to a bunch of adults you don’t know. Think about horizontal loyalty. Think about turning to people you already know, who are your friends, or friends of their friends and making something that makes sense to you together, that is as beautiful or as true as you can make it.
In every career, your job is to make and tell stories, of course. You will build a body of work, but you will also build a body of affection, with the people you’ve helped who’ve helped you back.
And maybe that’s your way into Troy.

In the beginning, the main challenge is knowing and understanding what your task entails and who are affected by it. Then as you move on being a more integral part of the team, you will find that it takes more than adjusting to new work culture and job experience. Communication is the main requirement of a team’s success and communicating with a team dispersed globally is in itself a great challenge.

Language

Each one of us comes from different background and have our very own native tongue. English is the predominantly first language here at Stampede but we make efforts to introduce new team members to the common English/web terminologies we use everyday. Most of us are semi-veterans in the field so our lingos can be overwhelming to the uninitiated. I converse often with new team members to give them confidence and shake away their fear of speaking in foreign language.

Timezone

Most of us at Stampede works on Eastern Standard Time, a 12-hour difference that makes daytime to our clients evening to us. Partly this is because we get to facilitate quicker response when communicating with the other side of the world. It is not an imposed rule though, everyone has the option to flexible work hours of their choice. Frankly, we’re all perfectly happy working nights anyway.

The time difference may seem extreme at first. There are meetings and voice conferences with international clients, rallying team members at 2am. But we have among the best clients a company can hope and a team to die for. Although like normal work hours, concentration does get pathetic around midnight. This is when having fun people to work with pays off.

Work Ethic

Work ethic is paramount here. Everyone must have sense of ownership towards the task at hand and take initiative to progress a project forward. We believe in diligence and hard work, the same goes for learning new things consistently. When things gets real hectic, it’s sometimes easy to forget that checking in with your fellow co-workers and clients is just as important as completing tasks on time. Having a strong set of ethical conduct in the background while the entire team is buzzing with work ensures that our Stampede values remain intact.

Culture

Our team is an ensemble of talent from different countries with different cultures and communication habits.

In Indonesia for example, we are used to an environment where people debate and discuss less. Conversation about a subject is done within a few small talks, nothing elaborate. It could come across as impolite or disrespectful at times, but it’s just the environment that demand fast result for all given instructions. No questions, no haggle, no debate.

It clearly differs from the culture in Stampede where communication thrives on everyone’s active participation. Major decisions are bounced around the team, analyzed and discussed. We share responsibilities and work together towards a goal. The ability to learn any cultural background and adapt quickly is therefore a necessity because effective communication ultimately leads to great work.

So you see, wherever we come from, we have the same opportunity here at Stampede. If you have interesting ways of handling diversity in your work environment, share them with us!

Mimi was a kitten that Dov and I found near Langkawi McDonalds being abused by a 7 years old little girl on vacation. She ran and hide under the tables, she didn’t scream from the pain, instead just crouch helplessly in hope that the merciless kicking would stop. We asked the girl to back off while her parents sat few metres away watching the entire episode, enjoying their meal. On impulse, we adopted the kitten and named her Mimi. That was 3 weeks ago.

Yesterday, Mimi died from breathing complications. She developed a diaphragmatic hernia from the abuse and while she battled few weeks for her life, her lung gave away a day before her surgery. Kuala Lumpur, normally cloudy and wet, couldn’t be more brighter and sunnier the day she died. She left a big void in all our hearts and she will be remembered for long for what she has been to us and the life she could have had if only she had not been born a stray.

During the last few hours Mimi and I shared, I have come to understand the kindness of strangers. Our deepest appreciation to everyone who has come together in their own way and tried to save her. To Renee and Syahir too, who did her justice.

Till we see you again, Mimi.

After a year of painstakingly searching and training and testing and yet another searching and training and testing, we have finally attained two of Malaysia’s best to add more flavour to the already saucy team. The number remains at 6 and although we had to let go a few familiar faces to make room for new talents to shine, I believe the present team radiates the right synergy and attitude to drive us to greater heights. Selective or choosy, the right kind of people don’t come by very often and in our case, a year of looking and a bit of luck at the right moment made a lot of difference.

SHAIFUL strikes us as a new breed of web enthusiast, with the eagerness and excitement towards work that can only be found in fresh-graduates. That kind of positive vibe rubs on us all, making everyone ridiculously giddy and happy to work along. Programming is a pretty personal affair here at Stampede – good programmer is difficult to come by, let alone train – but Shaiful has proven to be the kind of programmer who takes his own initiative at learning and welcomes challenge with an attitude that screams “BRING IT ON!”.

ANI – a long-time colleague and now Stampede’s resident SEO specialist – started her career in Accenture before switching gear to something closer at heart. A very detailed and thorough person all in all, Ani’s brilliance in professional copywriting and communication skill speaks of her experience and sensitivity towards clients needs. Always the one to say “dammit people, we can do this!” – her charming positivity towards work and readiness to learn new skills is vital to Stampede’s growth as a team.
